Hospitals in Raleigh offer some of the finest medical care in the country. The quality of North Carolina health care encompasses all facets of health and all stages of life. In addition to general care, facilities include hospitals for the treatment of mental illness, substance abuse, eye and ear problems, children's diseases, and cancer are widely available, as are state-of-the-art wellness, maternity, and rehabilitation services.

Hospitals in Raleigh and throughout the Raleigh-Durham area rank sixth in physicians per capita nationwide. This statistic is according to the 1990 US Census with 518.4 physicians per 100,000 people. The physician-to-population ratio is five times the national average, while the patient bed-to-population ratio is two times the national average. Approximately five million outpatients are treated each year, and inpatient services are provided to more than 175,000 people annually.

Duke Health Raleigh Hospital is a proud part of the Duke University Health System. DHRH features the brand-new Duke Health Raleigh Cancer Center offering cutting-edge technology and comprehensive, multidisciplinary services for cancer patients. DHRH also offers the Duke Health Raleigh Cardiovascular Center with state-of-the-art diagnostic technologies and multidisciplinary, collaborative care. The hospital includes a musculoskeletal center, childbirth center with special care nursery, a diabetes center, outpatient imaging center, a wellness center, intensive and critical care, same-day surgery and community outreach and education.

Rex Hospital has been recognized by HCIA/Sachs as one of the nation's top 100 hospitals for cardiovascular and orthopedic excellence. Rex Cancer Center, the only Wake County cancer center recognized and accredited by the American College of Surgeons as a Community Cancer Center, now offers a cancer-genetics-testing program. Rex is also the only hospital in the Triangle to offer mobile mammography and a dedicated Breast Care Center to meet the needs of area women.

WakeMed Health and Hospitals is home to one of the state's finest heart centers, as well as to the area's only freestanding children's emergency department. The center also operates an advanced neonatal intensive care nursery and the county's only pediatric intensive care unit.
